Impact of widely-adopted CGIAR research-related innovations 2015-2016


These set of studies seek to measure the impacts of widely-adopted CGIAR research related innovations. Such innovations are distinct from those still in the pre- or early-adoption scale like those under field testing or in pilot studies and hence not validated by significant diffusion. This research in a sense targets ‘research successes’ that, due to their already widespread diffusion, lend empirical support to the global (or regional) public goods argument for CGIAR research.

SPIA recognizes that such studies are likely to depend on primary data gathered in the past and as such, the primary data may be from various sources and of somewhat uneven quality. Hence the proposed studies will likely depend to some extent on availability of existing data and may build on the approach of earlier researchers. We recognize the formidable challenge therein, for all the reasons associated with ex post counterfactual identification. As such, different strategies and approaches will be employed, targeting different indicators of impact as the case warrants, with the objective of bringing different types (and degrees of strength) of evidence to bear on the challenge.

The following studies were funded by SPIA in June 2015, following external review and PSC approval. Almost all studies, except one, will be completed at the end of 2016.

  2. Estimating Improved Tilapia Adoption Using DNA Fingerprinting: Philippines and Bangladesh, WorldFish
  3. Adoption of improved lentil varieties in Bangladesh: comparison between expert estimates, nationally representative farm household survey and DNA fingerprinting, ICARDA and Virginia Tech
  4. A Systematic and Global Assessment of the impact of CG technologies on Poverty, IFPRI and World Bank
  5. Using Global Agricultural, Health and Demographic Datasets to Identify the Impacts of CGIAR’s Modern Seed Varieties Since 1960s, US San Diego and George Washington University
  6. Influence of IFPRI's Research Results on Intra-household Decision-making and Gender Roles in the Field Programs of Large NGOs, TANGO
  7. Assessing the Impacts of Improved Cassava Varieties in Nigeria, IITA

An inception workshop was held on 16th and 17th July 2015 at IFPRI, Washington D.C. where funded studies were presented, and participants exchanged views on the operational and data-related aspects of long-term, large-scale studies of CGIAR research impact studies.
